Best For: First-time Costa Rica travelers

Travel Tips for Your Costa Rica Arenal Itinerary
- Pack rain jacket
- Book tours early
- Don’t overpack your schedule
- Expect weather changes
Day 1: Arrival in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Fly into San José and make your way to La Fortuna. This is where Costa Rica starts to shift. The roads get smaller, the greenery gets louder, and eventually, Arenal Volcano appears in the distance, quietly reminding you why you came.
Check into your hotel, settle in, and let your body catch up.
Day 2: Arenal Volcano & Lake Arenal
Ease into your trip with one of the most iconic experiences in any Arenal Costa Rica itinerary. Start with a guided walk through the rainforest near Arenal Volcano. This isn’t about pushing yourself, it’s about understanding the landscape, the wildlife, and the rhythm of the jungle with someon who calls these jungles home.
Later, head out onto Lake Arenal. Seeing the volcano from the water shifts everything. It feels bigger. Quieter. More real.

Day 3: Zip Lining & Balsa River Rafting
This is where your Costa Rica adventure itinerary really kicks in. Start the day zip lining above the jungle canopy, fast, high, and just enough adrenaline to wake you up. Then head to the Balsa River for one of the best rafting experiences in Costa Rica. With Class II–III rapids, it’s the perfect balance of excitement and accessibility, you’re not spending all day travling to the river, making it one of the top things to do in Arenal, Costa Rica.

Day 4: Free Day in La Fortuna
This might end up being your favorite day. Sleep in. Wander into town. Find a coffee shop and stay longer than planned, then order another because hey you are on vacation after all! For this day you can easily add hot springs, waterfalls, or more tours, but you don’t have to. Costa Rica isn’t just about doing, it’s about being, and this day gives you space for that.
If You Have More Time in Costa Rica
If you’re not ready to leave Costa Rica just yet and honestly, most people aren’t this is where your trip can take a completely different turn.
After Arenal, many travelers head toward the coast. But instead of following the usual route, consider slowing things down in the southern Pacific region, around Dominical.
This part of Costa Rica feels different.
Less polished. Less crowded. More raw in the best way.
It’s where jungle meets ocean, where mornings start with howler monkeys instead of alarm clocks, and where the pace of travel shifts completely.

During my time there, I stayed at a unique rental home tucked into the hills, a place that felt more like a reset than a destination. Days were slower. Intentional. Grounded in nature in a way that’s hard to explain until you experience it.
Nearby, you’ll also find places like Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see Costa Rica’s wildlife up close while supporting rehabilitation efforts that actually matter.
It’s a completely different side of Costa Rica and one that pairs surprisingly well with the energy of Arenal.
If you’re building out a longer Costa Rica itinerary, this is where I’d send you next.
Day 5: Rio Celeste & Tenorio Volcano National Park
Some places don’t feel real until you see them yourself. That’s Rio Celeste. Located in Tenorio Volcano National Park, this hike takes you through the rainforest to one of the most surreal sights in Costa Rica, a bright blue river and waterfall that almost looks edited. It’s easily one of the most popular thing to do in this region of Costa Rica and absolutely worth the full-day trip.

Day 6: Sloths & One Last Adventure
Before you leave, Costa Rica slows things down… just a little. Start with a guided walk to spot sloths in the wild, slow, hidden, and completely unbothered by everything around them. If you’re not ready for it to end, you can add one last adventure more rafting, canyoning, or simply soaking in the views around Arenal. This is a true DIY day. Decide if you are up for more adventure, or would rather spend time processing all you have done so far.

Day 7: Departure from La Fortuna
Make your way back to San José, for your flight home.
You’ll leave with muddy shoes, a camera full of green, and that feeling you can’t quite explain, but you’ll recognize it when you get home.

Is Arenal Worth It for a Costa Rica Itinerary?
If you’re wondering whether to include Arenal in your Costa Rica itinerary, the answer is absolutely yes.
This region gives you everything, adventure, nature, and just enough stillness to actually take it all in.
Best Time to Visit Arenal, Costa Rica
On paper, the best time to follow this Costa Rica Arenal itinerary is during the dry season (December to April), when you’ll have clearer views of Arenal Volcano and ideal conditions for outdoor activities.
But this is also the most crowded time to visit.

If you don’t mind a little rain and I mean the kind that feels more like a daily reset than a disruption, the rainy season (May to November) offers a completely different experience.
I went during the rainy season, and there was something almost magical about the daily jungle rain. The air felt fresher, the landscapes were impossibly green, and everything slowed down in the best way.
It’s the kind of place where rain doesn’t ruin your plans, it becomes part of them.
So really, it comes down to the kind of experience you want:
Dry season: better weather, more crowds
Rainy season: fewer crowds, more character
Either way, La Fortuna delivers.
Where to Stay Near San José Without Staying in the City
If you’re flying in or out of San José but don’t want to stay in the chaos of the city, this is one of those little decisions that can completely change the feel of your trip.
Instead of booking a standard airport hotel, consider staying somewhere just outside the city that actually feels like Costa Rica.
One place I found that does this beautifully is Pasafino Yoga Farm, a quiet, nature-filled stay tucked into the hills about 45 minutes to 1 hour from San José International Airport (SJO), depending on traffic.
It’s close enough to be convenient for arrival or departure days, but far enough away that you wake up to jungle sounds instead of traffic.
It feels slower. More intentional. Like you’ve already arrived, without having to go far at all.
If you want a soft landing into Costa Rica (or a peaceful reset before heading home), this is exactly the kind of place I’d recommend.
